About Ancient Eritrea Explorer
Ancient Eritrea Explorer is an independent digital archive of the ancient civilizations of Eritrea and the Red Sea coast. It gathers ten thousand years of history into one place: the million-year-old fossil beds of Buya in the Danakil Depression and the obsidian toolmakers of the Asmara plateau; the Land of Punt, where Egyptian fleets came for frankincense and myrrh; the kingdom of D'mt and its temple at Yeha; the port of Adulis and the Aksumite Empire it served; and the medieval kingdom of Medri Bahri, ruled from Debarwa by the Bahri Negassi.
The archive is built to be read, explored and remembered. It holds a scrollable chronicle and an interactive timeline of events, a side-by-side comparison of the eras, an interactive map of the archaeological sites and their trade routes, galleries of artifacts from Adulis and Matara, an exhibit of the Ge'ez script alongside the Proto-Sinaitic signs that came before it, a quiz that awards era badges, a visitor archive of photographs and stories, and footnotes listing the sources behind the narrative.
It is made for students and teachers, for researchers who need a citable overview, for the Eritrean diaspora reconnecting with a long inheritance, and for any curious reader who has never been told that some of humanity's oldest states stood on this coast. Everything is free to read, and nothing is behind a login.
The archive is built and maintained as an independent, non-commercial educational project. Its historical narrative is adapted from research by Zantana, and the sources behind each period are listed in the footnotes at the end of the archive. Corrections, additional sources and new site entries are welcome.
